My journey into photography began in the 1970s when I purchased my first DSLR, a Nikkormat film camera. Since those early days, I’ve transitioned from film to digital and honed my expertise in wildlife photography. Living in Johannesburg, I am fortunate to have easy access to South Africa’s remarkable game reserves and national parks, with some located just 30 minutes from my doorstep.

I frequently organize day trips for photographers and nature enthusiasts to Big Five reserves like Pilanesberg and Dinokeng. Additionally, early-morning outings to Rietvlei and Marievale provide incredible opportunities to capture diverse species of wild birds, particularly during the summer months when migratory birds arrive from Europe.

My primary vehicle for photography is a 2002 Land Rover Defender 110, extensively modified to enhance comfort and functionality for up to four photographers. These upgrades include raised suspension, gull-wing glass rear windows, reduced rear seating, and an inverter for charging laptops and batteries while on the move.

I have remained steadfast in my loyalty to the Nikon brand and primarily use the Nikon Z6ii and D500 for my work. Wildlife photography demands versatility, so I rely on a range of zoom lenses. My Sigma 150–600mm and Nikon 28–400mm lenses are my go-to options for wildlife, while my 12–28mm, and 28–300mm lenses serve other purposes. The 28–300mm lens, in particular, is ideal for travel photography due to its broad focal range and portability—a lesson I learned after lugging a 12kg camera bag through cobblestone streets during a walking tour.
